Parenting Support

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

The thought of becoming a parent can feel overwhelming — especially if your pregnancy was unexpected. Parenting is a big responsibility, but many people also describe it as one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives.

At House of Grace, we offer both emotional and practical support to help you prepare for parenthood and connect you with local community resources in the Cowichan Valley and across Vancouver Island.

Common Questions About Parenting

You may find yourself asking:

  • How can I raise a baby?

  • How will I manage financially?

  • What about school or work?

  • Where will I live?

  • Are there services in Duncan or nearby communities that can help?

  • What medical appointments do I need to schedule?

  • What about the baby’s father, my parents, or friends?

  • What if I don’t feel able to parent — how do I connect with an adoptive family?

We understand these are real and valid questions. You don’t have to figure them out on your own.

What Is Parenting Support Advocacy?

Preparing to Be a Parent

There’s no single “right way” to parent. You’ll discover your own parenting style over time — but here are some tips to help ease the transition:

Accept Help — and Ask for It
Friends and family often want to help. Don’t hesitate to accept meals, childcare, or help with household tasks. If people don’t offer, it’s okay to ask for what you need.

Have Realistic Expectations
Life will look different with a baby. Your house might be messy and your schedule unpredictable — and that’s okay. Be gentle with yourself as you adjust.

Ask Questions
Parenting is new to everyone at some point. Talk with trusted friends or family, and filter advice to choose what fits your situation. You’ll find your own rhythm.

Slow Down and Enjoy the Moment
Amid the sleepless nights and challenges, take time to savour the small moments — cuddles, smiles, and milestones. These early days pass quickly.

Find Community Supports
Local mom’s groups, baby cafés, and parent-child drop-ins can be invaluable. They connect you with other parents and give you a place to learn and belong. Your House of Grace Client Advocate can help you find programs near you.

Believe in Yourself — and Forgive Yourself
No one parents perfectly. You are the best parent for your child. Give yourself grace, and know that mistakes are part of learning.

Parenting Alone

Parenting on your own can feel exhausting at times. It’s normal to feel like you’re just surviving some days.

Try to:

  • Accept help from friends, family, or community programs

  • Let go of guilt or unrealistic expectations

  • Focus on moments of joy and connection with your child

You don’t have to do this by yourself. A House of Grace Client Advocate can provide emotional support, encouragement, and referrals to community resources.

Depending on your needs and location, we can connect you with:

  • Food banks and community resource centres

  • Housing and financial support programs

  • Free or low-cost daycare and parenting workshops

  • Baby clothes, diapers, and supply programs

  • Local parenting and family groups
